Irwell Medical Practice, in Rochdale Road, said some patients received a phone call from individuals who used the name ‘Anton Fernandz’.
They claimed to work at the GP practice and asked for personal financial information and bank details.
The GP practice said these calls are fraudulent, adding that they will only ask for your name, date of birth and address.
This is an example of a vishing scam, short for ‘voice phishing’ is a type of scam where fraudsters use phone calls or voice messages to trick people into giving up sensitive information.
A spokesperson for Irwell Medical Practice said: “We have been made aware that some patients have received scam phone calls from certain individuals and one of the names they are using is Anton Fernandez, claiming to be from Irwell Medical Practice, asking for bank details or other personal financial information.
“Please be aware Irwell Medical Practice only ask for your name, date of birth and address due to GDPR. We will never ask for your bank details.
“These calls are fraudulent and are in no way connected to our practice.
“If you receive such a call, do not share any bank or financial information and hang up immediately.
“Please help us spread the word by sharing this message with friends and family, especially those who may be more vulnerable.
“Your safety is our priority. Thank you for your continued vigilance and support.”
Burnley Group Practice, in Church Street, Burnley, also said it is aware of the scam circulating and warned its patients not to fall for it.
A spokesperson said: “We have received notification from a local GP practice that one of their patients has received a phone call from someone masquerading as a medical professional associated with their practice.
“They alleged they were a “senior health advisor” who worked alongside the practice in question.
“The caller engaged the patient initially by asking about their medical problems, both old and ongoing.
“Once a rapport had been established, the caller then offered them some medication which they could try at a cost, then proceeded to ask for bank details to proceed with payment.
“The number of the caller was 01900 516 559, a number that has been previously associated with fraudsters for vehicle accident insurance call scams.
“Be aware that if someone from our practice, or associated with our practice, calls you they would not ask for bank details.
“If they were to do a prescription, it would be sent to your pharmacy in the usual way.”
