A suspected Islamist terrorist plot in western Germany was allegedly intended to be financed through a series of fraudulent high-end electronics transactions, prosecutors said on Wednesday.
Senior prosecutor Alexandra Wiese told dpa that investigators believe a suspect ordered expensive electronic devices, failed to pay for them, and resold the goods to generate funds. Wiese added that investigators assume the scheme brought in at least a five-figure sum.
Authorities suspect the money was intended to help finance a planned Islamist terrorist attack.
A 27-year-old man with Bosnian-Herzegovinian citizenship was arrested in Essen early on Wednesday as part of coordinated police raids at six properties across various cities in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The man is due to appear before an investigating magistrate later on Wednesday.
