That’s probably the red-flaggiest headline I have ever written. So many things to be wary of, but if you are a regular user of the comms app Discord, you may have been recently spammed for ads to join casinos you may never have heard, but do tread carefully as, among any legitimate ads out there, are ones that are trying to scam you out of the crypto you probably don’t have anyway.
A recent investigation by KrebsOnSecurity highlighted over 1200 such scam ads, with many linking popular gaming names such as Mr Beast as being involved when this is the fakest of fakenews.
We have seen this kind of scam in other areas with everyday celebs seeing their likeness added to a con job, and in a lot of cases, other than common sense, they can be difficult to spot to the untrained eye.
The rule of thumb is to assume if it sounds iffy, it is, and even if it doesn’t, then still double and triple-check before handing over any financial details.
For instance, one such ad promised a sign-on bonus of $2500 using a promo code. Again, if it’s too good to be true, it definitely is.
This scam is clever too, in that even after signing up and trying to cash out your winnings, the payout fails, and you then need to make a “verification deposit” of around $100 in crypto. If you haven’t rolled your eyes and closed the browser at this point, you will then be harassed for more crypto and even then start getting follow-ups from fake “scam-recovery experts” who will, of course, want to be paid to help you get the crypto back you lost in the first place. Are you keeping up? These guys aren’t real either.
The Discord user who outed all of this, Thereallo said: “We were being spammed relentlessly by these scam posts from compromised or purchased [Discord] accounts. I got frustrated with just banning and deleting, so I started to investigate the infrastructure behind the scam messages. This is not a one-off site; it’s a scalable criminal enterprise with a clear playbook, technical fingerprints, and financial infrastructure.”
In short, just don’t fall for this stuff. And if you think you know anyone who might, then point them in our direction to read this page.
Stay safe out there
